Updated: Aug 22, 2018

On September 6, 1901, William McKinley, the 25th President of the United States, was shot on the grounds of the Pan-American Exposition at the Temple of Music in Buffalo, New York. He was shaking hands with the public when Leon Czolgosz, an anarchist, shot him twice in the abdomen. McKinley died eight days later on September 14 of gangrene caused by the gunshot wounds. He was the third American president to have been assassinated, following Abraham Lincoln in 1865 and James A. Garfield in 1881.

-He was the fifth president from Ohio in 28 years.

-McKinley was the first president to ride in an automobile while in office. After he was shot, he was transported to the hospital in an electric ambulance.

-First Lady Ida McKinley didn't like the color yellow. She disliked it so much she had everything yellow removed from the White House.

- McKinley showed compassion for his assassin

After Leon Frank Czolgosz shot McKinley, the crowd subdued him and began to beat him severely. The wounded McKinley shouted “Boys! Don’t let them hurt him!”

-Unlike many of the presidents of that era, McKinley did not have a beard.

His face is on the $500 bill.

-He had a pet parrot named "Washington Post".

-McKinley was the first president to use a telephone to campaign.

-McKinley was the only president between Andrew Johnson and Woodrow Wilson to be clean shaven.
